Kyla – Second Class Mage / Medical Officer – Quicksilver
John had succeeded in taking over a spell and then some. Somehow, she had taken over all the turrets on the ship, kicking and locking the rest of us out. Such an action had freaked everyone out. Everyone tried to contact her to demand that she stop or to give her order. She had ignored everything.
Then she started to kill everything that got close. Eventually, we had to go searching for swarms to kill. The last of that swarm had been about to pinch all of us. If they had done so, we would have been dead, as we would have had nowhere to go, not with the jammers preventing us from escaping.
Two beams managed to cut the globe in half as two others had charged up. They had charged to the point that they had partially burned out. Somehow bypassing a large number of safety systems as they charged.
Those shots had been big enough to take out a moon or two. Thankfully, the jammer ships were one of the first ships destroyed. With those gone, we were able to jump. If we had stayed any longer, we would have been crushed between the plasma shockwaves.
As soon as we were free from the battle, my seat released me. A medical alert came in from the room I had left her in. I nearly started to blast the doors as I raced down to the room due to just how slow they moved. Finally, I reached her and ordered the door open.
Blood poured down her face and coated her hair. Her ears and nose trickled blood as she cried tears of blood. I turned her face a few times to see if she had suffered any injuries, but the system told me all I needed to hear.
She had overused her brain. Forcing it to work at such a level that she could not maintain. Hell, no one on the ship could have maintained control over so many systems long enough to get through a battle like the one we just got through.

Quickly injecting her with a series of nanobot solutions, nutrients, and an anesthetic. Her eyes dropped before her entire body went limp. “How is she?” came Captain Phillipa’s voice from behind me.
I shook my head as I ordered the chair to release the restraints. “It isn’t good. From what I can tell, she likely tried to become one with the system. She will be lucky if she doesn’t have any brain damage from such a stunt.”
“She went that deep? Is she stupid?” Came Tammie’s scoff from down the hall. “
“Tammie!” the captain sternly said. “She doesn’t know better. If I had any other choice, I would never have let her participate in that fight. Maybe you should go yell at your man about his decision to take down one of the main turrets while we are traveling so close to the border.” Tammie scoffed before stomping away.
“How long until we reach Luminara Prime?” I asked, needing to change the subject as I started to pick John up.
“In another three days. Will she be ready to leave the ship by then?”
“Honestly, I don’t know.”
“Ok, and when the time comes for her to leave, will you be able to let her go?” I stopped, unsure about what she meant. I wasn’t attached to her, was I? “I see you have some thinking to do. Just know that I will stand behind you no matter what you end up deciding.”
Carrying John to the medical bay, my eye momentarily catching on the notification icon that was flashing in the corner of my vision. Glancing at it, it enlarged enough for me to read the general information attached. Frowning at what I read, I pulled up the failure as well as the two completed quests.
It was then that I remembered what her status had said when I had scanned her. Her name was no longer John. In fact, I didn’t even know what her name was. Ever since I had met her, none of her information had been blocked, yet now most of it was. Just what had happened to cause her to not trust me with anything more than what the system forced?
Then again, maybe it was for the best. She was likely to get sponsored into one of the system academies while we returned to doing quests and wandering across the quadrant. It was unlikely we would see each other for quite a while. Maybe a century or two.
The very thought of not being able to talk to her for even a week was causing me pain. She may not have become attached to me, but, for some reason, I sure as hell was attached to her. Maybe I will be able to convince the captain to keep us in the area for a while. Just to make sure she settles in well. Maybe help her find a friend. I wonder if I had any family in that system that could help.
