  Chapter 34: The First One

  "Then what would you call it? There is something moving inside that gss container." Bel pointed at the object in question while also taking a step back.

  James' expression showed his displeasure. He had not wanted Bel to see this, but it was too te for regrets now.

  He could not stop the process now, otherwise, the experiment would likely fail, and he would have wasted some very precious materials that he could not afford to repce at the moment.

  He moved in front of the gss vial and used his wand to perform some scans on the magical wavelength of the subject.

  "Tsk… it's a bit too soon for it to hatch." He hurried to control the temperature of the fme before moving quickly to the ingredients cabinet.

  "Wait… hatch…?" Bel narrowed her eyes, trying to peer inside the gss vial, but the liquid inside was too dark to get a good look. Whatever that substance was, it was almost bck in color and very thick.

  When James increased the intensity of the fmes, the liquid began to bubble violently.

  James picked up a small wooden box from the shelves and hurried back to the gss container before dumping its contents on top of the bck substance.

  Then he took a step back and observed it carefully.

  Bel could see the changes immediately. The bck substance was turning more liquid, and the color was clearing up, allowing her to finally see what was inside.

  "Is that an egg?"

  It had at least the shape of an egg, except it was over ten times the size of a normal one and had a vibrant red color.

  "What kind of… wait, it's changing," Beltrix noted that the tone of the egg's color was getting darker at the same time the liquid was getting lighter as if it were absorbing something from it.

  James didn't bother answering Bel's incessant questions, as this was not the moment for that.

  Soon enough, the liquid had turned as clear as water, while the egg had become pitch bck. Once in a while, it would also move and collide with the gss of the container, making loud cracking noises.

  "It's going to break the gss!" Bel pointed out while also increasing her distance from the object.

  "I can only wait now…" James muttered. He had done everything he needed to do. Whether this experiment was a success or not, he would see soon enough.

  Just as Bel had said, the egg ended up shattering the gss in one of its movements. As soon as it did this, it also fell down from the table and hit the floor.

  James cleaned the mess with a simple wave of his wand and continued to look at the egg.

  There were many cracks across its surface, and more were being made every second.

  "What kind of creature did you put in there, Potter?" Bel approached a bit but remained behind James, just in case she had to use him as a shield.

  More pieces of the eggshell cracked, and they began to hear noises emanating from the creature inside. They sounded like a mixture between a bird and a lizard.

  Finally, a small pale paw emerged from the cracked shell.

  "What is that?" Bel asked again.

  "Come on, little guy… get out of there already," James spoke to the creature inside the egg.

  As if the being inside had heard and understood his words, it seemed to redouble its efforts to exit its shell prison.

  "Wait!" Bel's face went even paler from the shock. "That's… That's…!" She pointed at the creature as it escaped the egg.

  The little one shook its body rapidly to release the stuck pieces of shell.

  "Kyu!" It let out a loud cry and looked toward James and Bel with curiosity.

  "That's a dragon!" Bel finally said with shock.

  "It is not a dragon…" James corrected her.

  "Kyu?" The little creature now looked confused.

  "I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you are not a dragon." James told the newborn.

  "Kyu…"

  "Look what you did!" Bel scolded him. "You made him sad."

  "Was I supposed to lie?" James raised an eyebrow.

  "But if it's not a dragon… then what is it?" She asked.

  "Kyu?" The little guy also seemed interested in knowing.

  "It is a very advanced artificial magical construct… in other words, a chimera." James expined.

  "A chimera?..." Bel vaguely knew about those. "But you said it wasn't alive. Aren't chimeras supposed to be combinations of different living creatures?"

  "Kyu!" The little one stood tall on its four legs and moved its wings a bit, as if saying, 'Yes, I am alive!'

  "It has some simirities with living creatures, but ultimately, it works differently. And compared to whatever chimera you've read about in old alchemy books, my creation is centuries ahead of those." James said with pride.

  "Kyu!" The creature puffed its chest.

  "It is kinda cute, though…" Bel commented.

  James almost dropped his wand from the shock.

  'Did I just hear Beltrix—The Mad Witch—Lestrange calling a small creature… cute?' He must have heard that wrong.

  He gave her a side gnce. Bel was looking at the construct with a warm smile on her face.

  He had never seen her like this… she looked almost human now.

  James moved back to observe his creation. He had to admit that she was right about that. The little guy was very adorable in its current state.

  It had a draconic look, standing on four legs with a pair of small wings on its back.

  Its scales were pristine white, and it had a pair of rge blue eyes.

  "Are you going to name him?" Bel asked.

  James hadn't thought about that yet since he didn't expect it to awaken this early. "Sure… lets go with 001."

  "Kyu?..."

  "That's not a name. That's a number, you dufus." Bel huffed.

  "But he is the first one…" He had never put much effort into the naming part of the process, this was something that his students had often called him out for.

  "Fine then… what about Primum?"

  "Primum?.... It means 'The First'... I suppose it at least sounds like a name." Bel said.

  "Kyu!"

  "The little guy seems to like it." Bel chuckled. "Wait, does that mean you are pnning on making more?"
