Chapter 16. Scouting further.

The next day was indeed spent just as Jack had planned, with the group working to expand the house Jack's core party lived in. By the end of the day there were two extensions added to it, now resembling a small, mini mansion, rivaling, surpassing even the size of village elders home in all but hight. Not to mention that it was clearly of a much higher quality, both visually and structurally. Now, the entire twelve people party moved in there, eating meals together and forming friendly bonds with one another. It did not go unnoticed in the village either, whispers from the parties and those loitering around about another faction forming spread quite quickly, causing the village elder to visit once again.

"It's been what, just a day or so since we last spoke and your group is already making waves in this little sanctuary of ours. What else have you got in store for us I wonder?" the village elder chuckled as he spoke, sitting opposite Jack at the table, the last rays of sun gracing the room through open window.

"I wonder of that myself." Jack just shrugged, not the least bit concerned about whatever rumors were being spread among the rest of the gifted, or village people for that matter. All that was of significance were the actions taken again his group, in which case he was more than willing to let some people suffer to ward off other fools. "Everything we do is to ensure our own wellbeing, as any sane person would while trying not to harm others as we do so. Does not mean we will not fight back if fools were plotting against us. I have the luck to have the proper companions for that as well now."

"A reasonable stance, though the nature of people can show it's inherent weakness more easily when there is someone to envy. And I do have to say that this place of yours is enviable enough in and of itself, without mentioning any other blessing you might have acquired along with it." the village elder glanced towards the window, displaying a beautiful sight of a group of young women relaxing and chatting in the small garden that was just around the building, the fence that was more like a wall further still separating them from the rest of the village.

"Back in my world people like me right now were the incredibly rich people, money being the only currency that could attract women and attention of others and making heads drop and things go as one wanted. Here though, wealth is less impactful, though still important to a degree. What matters here is personal power or the ability to empower others. I believe the same is true outside the tutorial, is that not so?"

"That is indeed correct. The law of the jungle is prevalent all across the land, though there are places where laws are enforced and followed." village elder agreed to Jack's statement.

"No doubt enforced by someone incredibly powerful and their subordinates. That part will stay the same no matter the world. Might makes right and then those in power make the rules others will have to follow on the threat of confinement or worse. It's only that here I assume said truth is not hidden behind cleaver schemes and flowery words." Jack added.

"It would indeed seem it stays the same no matter what world one finds themselves in." the village chief chuckled, agreeing with Jack, the angel in disguise finding the man quite interesting. 'What a shame. If only you were not a Virtuoso. You could have achieved so much more.' he sighed in his mind, slightly disappointed in the wasted talent before him. 'Sometimes such mistakes just happen. Just pure bad luck is all.' he mused further, discarding the distracting thought afterward and focusing on the actual reason he had come over.

"While I, like any other elder would, appreciate our conversation, there are tasks that I must attend to and as such, necessity has brought me here today. Like with the rest of the larger groups taking residence in our village, I have to inform yours as well of the impending troubles coming our way."

"Don't be shy, inform away." Jack gestured for the man to continue, having formed a general assumption already about the topics about to come up.

"Well then." the elder cleared his throat, taking a few sips from the water cup before him and spoke further. "As you no doubt are aware we are just a small village, with barely above hundred people. The arrival of over two hundred strangers was never expected. You must understand that whatever resources we had saved up are quickly running out and we will not be able to offer any rewards for any sort of work to employ any of the new arrivals. And as someone of your wisdom, you no doubt understand that chaos and lawlessness will follow soon after."

"Yes, that much is indeed obvious and I can see why the idea of just turning away anyone who asked for help at the very beginning would be undesirable as well. A situation with no right answer."

"Precisely so. Thus, no longer able to help out, we humbly ask for some help in reducing and controlling the imminent riots and violence that will follow. Can we rely on your groups assistance?"

"I see no reason why we should not provide some sort of assistance, though we will figure out the shape and form of said assistance on our own end. You are free to inform us of the task you had in mind, but ultimately we will decide ourselves if I decide that the task requested is not optimal or desired. I do hope you understand my stance." Jack replied in a calm and collected manner, seemingly unbothered at all.

"Of course, I understand. I will have someone come over once we have any sort of proper plan prepared."

"Okay." Jack nodded and sent the elder off, returning to whatever he was occupied with before this conversation, which just so happened to be forming the class change items for his five to be farmers. 'This is going to be quite the profitable business.' he grinned as he looked at first of five creations we was planning to make.

Earth whisperer token(uncommon)- an item that grants access to Earth Whisperer mage subclass, focused on facilitating plant growth and to make earth more pliable, making them the perfect farmer of all manner earthen bounties. Int+1, Vit+1.

"One down, four to go." he hummed to himself as he examined the token he had created, quickly going over the remaining ones he would need to round out the team set up for what he had in plan. Since he had such a willing group, who was he do stand in their way? And if his assistance brought him a great deal of benefits as a result, all the better, especially so since the people in question would also benefit greatly from it all. With a pleased expression on his face, he got back to the task at hand, finishing the other four tokens by midnight, laying down to rest as soon as he was done. The group would head out to scout the surroundings the next day once more, their plan was to hopefully hunt enough monsters to get the five would be farmers to level five and attain their classes, ideally also earning enough matter for the first weapon set he could craft for Izumi's quartet.

  --------------------

"Anything of note to report?" the beautiful angel leader asked the angel disguised as the village chief as he reported in for the regular debriefing.

"Nothing too out of the ordinary. As expected, the Virtuoso is attaining his renown and has formed his own group. The supplies have almost run out and the goblin hordes scout groups have grown larger and more powerful. All is going according to the expectations set."

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"Any individuals that have caught your attention?" she asked as she hummed at the report.

"The Virtuoso is somewhat interesting as a person as well. It's such a shame he had attained such a class."

"There is no fixing that. Sometimes the rarity of a class is just as much a warning as indication of it's value, yet only those with knowledge about this world's classes would be aware of that. Anyone else?"

"The 'Samurai apprentice' that is with his group also seem like a smart person. Then there is the 'Lightning Striker' and also a 'Destroyer'. The rest seem somewhat lacking, either in class or demeanor. Though there is also a 'Contractor' among this batch of gifted as mentioned before. Her personality and potential is lacking though."

"It is not your fault. Keep up the good work." the angel lady smiled and bid her subordinate farewell as the connection was cut.

With renewed vigor the angel in the guise of the old village chief rose to his feet and returned to his tasks.

  ---------------------------------

"We will roam the same area we did last time." Jack spoke once the group had left the village walls, their rest day over and the start of yet another already upon them. "We have to make sure that that chaos orc was an exception and not a regular creature that we will encounter, for if it is the latter, I can only conclude that someone, somewhere does not want a single gifted to leave this tutorial zone alive." Jack added, as he asked Chiyo to take point, utilizing her scout's talents to ensure their expedition would go on as expected.

As Chiyo lead the way, Jack turned first to Alonso, asking about the progress of his group "How far along is your group with levels?"

"We all hit level three when you killed that chaos orc. How close to level four we are we have no idea, though who does, right?" he replied and chuckled.

"True that. Not like there is an experience bar we could track, though I suppose it's both a blessing and a curse." Jack agreed.

  "Why so?" questioned Kenji.

"That would be some sort of a high to chase, would it not? Now all you have is the vague knowledge that eventually, if you are doing whatever it is that your class specializes in, be it combat and killing or crafting, or anything else that corresponds with the classes, you will level up, gaining free attributes and perhaps new skills. Imagine there is a bar that tells you how close the next milestone is? How many people would recklessly chase it for a possibility of a new power up? And once they realize just how far away it actually is, what kind of ruthless and savage means would they try, just to speed up that process?" Jack explained, then asking a question that sent shivers down everyone's spines.

"For example." he continued "If killing monsters give you experience, would doing the same to other people work as well? Would chasing classes that grant experience for brutal acts like torture and the like not become more desirable? There will no doubt be those that will happily harm their fellow people just to attain that extra umph of power a bit sooner. Our own history has plenty of examples after all. At least now, there is no way to prove that such actions, or classes for that matter, speed up ones leveling, making it all a game of guesses and only those that truly revel in such actions would wholeheartedly chase those fringe experiences."

"I have to agree with Jack." Izumi agreed, having realized the same thing Jack had just explained half way through already. "Sometimes it is much better to not know such things, else too many will start to look at this place, this world and their current life as nothing more than just a game. How many of us have not played a villain route in a game? I know I have, even with the limited time I had for such things."

A silence took over the party as they traveled further ahead, encountering their first hostile group another fifteen minutes later. It was a group of fifteen goblins and a hob, making it mid sized, though not a problem for the party, especially so since Jack was not flying off to hold down some other monstrous creature. Their line was steady and confident, having already dealt with monsters and feeling less and less about putting them down.

Just like before, Kenji rushed forward, taken over by Izumi, Fumiko and Jack who killed a few goblins as their lines collided, once again followed by Kenji's taunt and buffs from Kaede, all the while Chiyo covered them with ranged fire and Emi employed debuffs that her contractor class had just unlocked. Thanks to the full scale of their approach, they were stronger and enemies weaker as they fought. Just moment later the spear line also reached the battle line, their own spears ending the life of several goblins as Kenji held off the hob while the rest of the hostile party was taken care off. Once that was done, Jack cleaned up the site of combat and they proceeded further ahead.

"Jack? Why does it feel like you are holding back?" Chiyo asked before they advanced further, having noticed he was not nearly as imposing and eye catching as he was in the fight against the chaos orc.

"Two reasons, really. Firstly, I need you guys to get more experience fighting and that would be night impossible if I were to go all out. Remember that I am a crafter, not front line fighter. Secondly, I do its o we have hidden trump cards should someone decided to stalk us and choose our group to prey upon. It's much harder for such a group to actually take us on if they believe me to be weaker than I actually am."

"Makes sense." Chiyo nodded in understanding, returning to her positio nand leading them forward, tracking the next group of monsters that could serve as their grinding stone and experience bag.

"I appreciate the thought you have put in this. We certainly need the practice and I wholeheartedly agree with your reasoning." Izumi spoke as she walked right next to him, stealing a few glances his way. "Would you care to tell me how strong that monster actually was? All Emi could tell with her appraisal was that it's species was named Chaos Orc and that it was above level twenty."

"You do know my class is of the same rarity as Emi's, right?"

"Yes of course, but since it seemed like your blows were of similar power, your attributes should be similar."

"Nice try, but I would suggest you don't ask such information in the future. I have strong suspicion that is should be considered either taboo or incredibly rude at the very least, bordering great insult."

"Never mind then. It was not my intention to offend." Izumi replied, bowing her head in apology.

"It's fine, just be more careful and tactful in the future." Jack waved it off, then added "Oh and do have a chat with your girls. I have about enough materials for one new item, so figure out who deserves an upgrade first. If you ask me though, I would say you or Fumiko, since you two are on the front lines and do deliver a lot of damage. Or we could go for a better mana tool for Emi, her debuffs are quite effective and will no doubt grow in utility as we go forward."

"I will have a talk with them and will inform you by the end of the day." izumi nodded in agreement, dashing forward to talk it over with Fumiko first, if where she slowed down was an indication. Still, their activity and discussions did not slow them down, allowing for a few more monster groups to be taken down before lunch.

The group stopped around midday to have some sustenance, choosing a small clearing within the forest for their momentary rest. As they finished their meal, Izumi also informed Jack of the decision their group had come to, deciding to get new focus for Emi first. Not only would her support ability would rise, but she could also make the contracts faster and with less strain on her system. And while while the latter was not necessary right now, the fact it was an option they could work with did provide them with extra options, should the need arise. With that too done, the group headed out once more, taking care of a few more monster groups before calling it a day and heading back towards the village, encountering another two groups on their way back.

They did stop a few times as they returned though as Jack pointed out a few patches of odd looking plants, telling their farmer group to do some digging and gather veggies they would get to enjoy later that evening while his and izumi's group stood watch.

"Ehm, big brother?" Kaede asked as the wall of the village appeared in their sights, the group still marching forward as the sun was quite close already to sunset. "Is it just me or all those monster groups felt smaller than the one we encountered in the other direction?"

  "So, you noticed it too?"

"Yes, Kenji has the same feeling as I do. There were simply too few hobgoblins in those groups."

"My thoughts exactly." Jack nodded in acknowledgement "Tomorrow we will head out in the other direction again and see if we were just unlucky or there are indeed stronger groups over there. If so, that is most likely the direction the monster horde, or whatever they have could be found at. Don't worry though kiddos, I will be there with you and if worst comes to pass, will bust my ass to keep you alive."
