Note 4 - Choice

  Feelings.

A rather common characteristic all humans shared. There couldn't be a human without the concept of "feeling", as it went against their very nature, their literal essence.

All that happened in the world, be it a good event, or a bad one, or even one we couldn't care less about, triggered a "feeling", as we receive stimulis that determines how we will "feel" about that.

The human mind, however, was still a fragile container... we could handle only so much "stimulis", before the amount of feelings becomes unbearable, and before agonizing pain would flash throughout every nerve and fiber of our body--

That waw what she was feeling right now. Too many stimulis. Too many feelings... agonies.

She didn't even remember when she started screaming, as the lights of the Kaleidoscope filled her fragile subconscious with an endless series of chains of information, thoughts, even just fizzles of unknown memory fragments she could not grasp or comprehend...

It was if some higher entity suddenly decided to dump all the data of the universe into her brain, and that did not feel good.. and as she wondered how her head didn't explode like a grape one would apply too much pressure on, her screams faded amidst the luminescent cosmos of multi colored lights...

..and then silence. She floated, her eyes barely open anymore, as she couldn't even release a sigh of relief.. the shards around her almost mocking her, as they slowly danced in rhythm, spiraling into forms and figures incomprehensible for human knowledge.

'...It.. stopped...', she barely thought. Yes, barely, as it was a miracle she even did think at the moment.. she struggled to even move, her body feeling worse than when the knocks nearly shattered her psyche. This was pure torture that dwarfed anything she had been through before, and it was like a punishment she didn't know she even deserved...

"Punishment? An amusing description, you've got there..", a voice seems to speak amidst this void. Her eyes would have widened in shock if she had any strength left...

"Oh? Surprised to hear me? I assure you, I am real. I am this whole place, o' unlucky one..", the lights kept on switching colors, modifying the whole environment to such a degree it seemed as if reality itself continously altered in sadistic tones and themes that defied common sense.

"You might wonder what is going on, hm? "Oooh, am I going insane?! Why am I going through this!? Did I anger some superior god, some cruel divine entity?!", the voice then chuckles, as it seems to mock her very thought process.

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

"Rest assured, the reason you are currently experiencing this excruciating pain, is yourself. There is no cause, no "divine entity", and not even anything wrong that you did. Well..", the voice went silent for a few moments that felt like eternity, and she swore that if the voice had a face, she'd have seen a smirk.

"...that depends on what your choice will be, o' Unlucky One beyond the veil. Tell me, do these experiences not feel familiar to you? Almost as if segments of your life, your insignificant existence, are being molded into horrific shapes and sounds? Oh... but you already did take a guess... you know, this is your consciousness, gradually tearing itself apart."

  ...

He was right... She remembered that "eye", from before, and at the same time, she experienced such a vehement remembrance in the form of coffee... even before, in the "abyss", she remembered vicious and malicious laughs, and then a memory of a girl laying in an hospital bed resurfaced... alongside the one of a woman that never left her side...

Hope. She had chosen to hope, to keep going forward amidst that abyss of hatred and malice, as if it mirrored the choices of a past life... she knew that these environments and whatever or whoever she was before... before this, were strictly connected.

"So you did figure it out, eh? I would say you're making progress, but you're essentially just at the start of this all... and poor soul, this is just a taste, of the evil that awaits you..."

  "...your own evil within."

  ...

After that, the voice was heard no longer. She struggled to stay conscious, she miraculously didn't succumb to the pain in her core esse, her left hand gripping her chest tightly, as she found a glassy platform to lay her numb feet on.

"Choice...", she muttered, her eyes half lidded, observing this realm, likely devoid of any concept of boundaries. It was strangely... comforting, in a twisted, sick way. She found comfort in the words that voice told you... even though, she knew her torment had just begun, at least she now was aware of not being alone in this journey that seemed to not have an end.

She didn't need to wait long for something new to happen, though. In front of her, 7 bridges of pure crystalline, solidified light form, creating pathways to... different doors. Each path for a door... each path for a choice.

She could only pick one, she understood. The choice she'd made now, might have meant either a tragic demise, or a potential triumph against these horrors, which apparently, would become even worse.

Taking a deep breathe, the courageous, unlucky one, made a decision.

"As I was dropped in the middle of nowhere... then, the middle, is what I'll take...", she mumbles, and with new, unknown strength, she sprints forward with determination.

The nameless girl, couldn't know what awaited her beyond this "choice", and this path might have brought upon her the worst possible consequences or perhaps a not so bad continuance of events. Would she realize, what in the world was going on? Would she remember her identity, her name, her origins?

Only her choices would tell. And as she finally found herself in front of the gigantic, peerless gate, her mind swirling in a cacophony of mixed feelings, she conceded to the voice one thing:

  Here, her existence was insignificant.
