Chapter 17

  Year 2054

  Month unknown

  Location [Redacted]:

  Huff.... huff..

The footsteps were loud as he ran through the dark hall. The only light came from a narrow ribbon window running along the base of the right wall, casting eerie, stretched shadows that seemed to reach for him with each stride. The emergency lights in the hall glowed too dim to see more than what was directly in front and, in some spots, none at all - creating pockets of perfect darkness where anything could be hiding.

  Drip Drip.

A sword painted red dripped the fresh blood of its victim.

  Fuck

  …

  Think Dante!

  Think!

Dante wore a torn shirt, ripped as if a beast attempted to claw through him, exposing bruised skin beneath the tattered fabric. His arms were covered with purpling bruises, and he was missing a shoe - his exposed foot leaving smeared bloody prints behind him. Splashes of blood decorated his face and clothing.

He ran faster and faster, his hand wrapped tightly around the dark hilt of the Mercier sword.

No time to think just move!

  BANG!

Dante heard the sound of metal being hit.

  THUD!

Then came the sound of the wall’s resistance.

  Crash!

Glass broke from somewhere far away.

  “Ahhh someone please help!”

  “Mommy? Mommy!”

  “Run everyone run!”

  “Every man for himself.”

The chaotic sound outside the dark corridors rang clear in Dante’s mind.

No time to think. Just keep moving. I have a plan; I got the sword now I have to get the fuck out of here.

Mercier soldiers should be at the end of this.

I just have to keep moving.

  ARGH!!!!!!!

A symphony of screeches came from far behind Dante.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

  Faster!

  Damn it!

  Move faster!

Suddenly, a door from the shadows next to Dante tore from its wall, slamming to Dante’s side with the force of a dozen people. Dante tumbled away and crashed through a window on the side.

  SCREECH!

A crashing sound came from under Dante as he tumbled in the air.

  Thud.

Dante landed on a crashed bus, the metal roof denting beneath his weight. The impact sent waves of fresh pain through his already battered body.

  Crack!

The sound of his arm snapping following the drop.

“Fuck!” Dante yelled as he turned his body and grabbed the Mercier sword next to him.

  Boom!

The bright light of an explosion of a collision of cars erupted and Dante looked to see the street cut off by the blazing fire. Around him, under the bus and to the side, countless corpses and crashed cars.

“I always said it was bullshit how in games there is some tutorial section where fucked up shit slows down for the character to adjust… I guess I was wrong it does happen.” Dante slowly climbed down and began scanning the streets.

Ok that looks fine I know this area if I go through that alley and through those buildings I can find a motorcycle locked away, thanks Sai for having a strange habit of convenient vehicles just laying around the city.

Even better, those buildings have plenty of windows and fire escapes. If I need to avoid a corridor, it will be easy.

  ARGH!

The screams continued from above him and beyond the flaming vehicles.

Ok plan set. Time to move right now!

He hit the pavement with a groan, sword clutched tight.

My arm hurts like hell. I might have broken something it feels like there is a war drum under my skin…

A war drum thats on fire!

Dante limped as he forcefully pushed himself to move forward.

The tight alley was up ahead.

Right in front of the alley, a car was parked in the way. Dante climbed over it, ignoring the flaring pain that ensued with every movement.

Someone must have used this to block off the entrance.

He thought as he saw the driver’s door open.

  Is that?

Dante hobbled closer as he saw a pistol on the driver’s seat. Freezing as he saw a woman slumped in the passenger seat, he hair covering the upper half of her face. Blood dripping down from the hidden face. Dante looked up to see a bullet hole in the car ceiling above the woman. Dante quickly checked the gun and tossed it aside, leaving the car.

  Damaged, it’s useless to me.

No time for anything, breath keep your mind on your objective and carry it out.

Dante kept moving through the narrow alley. On each side he had the safety of rising walls. The confined space amplified every sound from his labored breathing, to the distant wailing from streets beyond.

Finally a moment of peace behind a car so nothing can get in without some climbing, in front a deadend commercial building, and on my sides large ass buildings.

This is the safest I’ve felt in the past hour.

  …

  AHH!!

  Huh?

Dante looked up in time to see a man fall from the sky.

  “Help me!!”

  CRUNCH!

Dante’s mouth inadvertently opened as he stared at the man who had just fallen from the buildings above. The man’s skull had folded in on itself, neckbone jutting up like a broken spear. Blood poured out and painted the floor and walls.

  …

Well, that moment of peace is over now.

  …

“I fucking hate today.” Dante shook his head, mumbling out loud as he continued.

Here it is, one of the Mercier buildings known for …

  Uh

  It…

Ok, I have no clue what this building does but who cares I have a master code, so I can get past the retinal scanner, and that’s all that matters.

Dante aligned himself to the scanner. The metallic door hummed as it slid open.

  Here we go.

Dante thought as he entered the building.
