Chapter 22

“NGI16 has entered final testing phases,” Dante heard Cole’s voice through the door. “Initial results indicate a ninety-seven percent reduction in side effects compared to NGI15, with enhanced performance metrics across all target parameters. We’ve secured exclusive patents on three key components of the formula.”

“We have also begun plans for NGI17 which will start the moment NGI16 hits the markets.”

Clare fixed his tie and adjusted the suit, her movements brisk but her eyes concerned. When she finished, it was as if nothing had happened, save for the bruising that was blooming near his cheekbone and the faint streak of dried blood beneath his nose.

  “Hold still, young master.”

She retrieved a small kit from the side pocket of her apron. With a gentle touch, she applied a light concealer around the swelling, smoothing it over with the tip of her finger.

“Still mad at me Clare?” Dante gave the most charming smile he could muster.

“Young master. Today was dangerous. Mirabella... Lady Mirabella has always caused you problems but never an assassin.” Clare’s voice carried both annoyance and worry. Her fingers trembled slightly as she continued her work.

“Each of you have a different mother and the others have bullied you but.” Clare bit her lip in worry.

“Why does Mirabella hate you so much?”

Dante stared at Clare tears all but forming in her eyes, he sighed and lifted a finger wiping them away.

“Because Cole’s greatest advantage is the fact that he is well rounded compared to all the others. I’m the same but better and she resents me for it.” Dante answered softly.

“You should bring proof to your father.” Clare continued.

“I checked the assassin he had no proof on him, she might be incompetent but she has a decent advisor Chen Tu, that guy makes sure that evidence isn’t left behind.” Dante responded

  …

A moment of silence passed between them as Clare put the finishing touches on his appearance.

“I really am thinking of returning to the arena. No not thinking, I’ve decided on it already,” Dante broke the silence with a soft yet firm voice.

Clare stopped and nearly jumped in shock.

  …

“Young master … Dante are you sure?” she asked softly.

  “Yes” Dante answered

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

  “Are you going to compete?”

“No not that I still don’t care for the whole head of the family thing. But there is more to learn, twice today I fought people once against an enemy I should have won the first much easier, and this assassin, I got lucky.”

“Very well young master. Me and Sai will prepare everything you need, Im sure your father will be thrilled.”

  “How do I look Clare?”

“Like you didn’t just get beaten up by an assassin young master.”

“How cold, your supposed to say handsome.”

  Clare remained silent.

“Fine fine time to go back in I hear Katarina’s voice now.”

Dante reentered the room, drawing a brief glance from those around as Katarina continued.

“Hearts Desire continues to exceed expectations,” she purred. “Thanks to our charities, and initiatives many unfortunate people are being saved. Two governors have even thrown in all their weight just to support us. I unfortunately can’t tell you why ethics and all that.”

Durrant began to choke on his wine at Katarina, mentioning ethics.

“Are you ok my brother? Drink slower drink slower.” she teased drawing a annoyed glance from Durrant.

She took a deliberate sip of wine before continuing. “Where was I, Ah yet so the charity galas have generated excellent publicity. The veterans’ housing initiative in particular has garnered significant political capital, which have allowed other things to simply thrive. I’m starting to think about funding our police officers as well hehe.”

Why does that cute giggle not seem cute to me.

Dante wondered as he took a seat and glancing around.

Huh I guess they feel the same way.

Dante thought watching the reactions of his other siblings.

“Samantha,” Alexander turned motioning for her to begin.

Samantha straightened. “We’ve secured exclusive streaming rights to three major sporting events, which should drive significant subscription growth in the coming quarter. The new premium membership tier has exceeded adoption projections the number is still growing however its already surpassed twenty percent. We have revived and remade classics from many years ago finding people who look near identical to those of the original’s and have spent a large amount of wealth this however has made back what it was worth as for profit that is still yet to be seen. Our latest reality competition show has broken all previous viewership records.”

“I see.” Alexander then turned his attention slowly to Dante.

“Dante, have you decided what you wish to do?” he asked calmly his face near expressionless.

  I’ve always rejected this.

  …

Dante stared at his father who awaited an answer patiently.

Time seemed to flow slowly, the expressions of the other Mercier’s seemed confused except for Samantha who already knew what Dante was thinking.

“Yes I do wish for something.”

Dante finally spoke, taking a deep breath before continuing.

“Father, I wish to return to the arena.”

Dante’s declaration drew a shocked expression from the majority of his siblings. Katarina looked as excited as ever.

Alexander Mercier continued his stare and slowly asked Dante a question.

“Are you sure? You must miss at least a week of classes to reintegrate. And this time you won't be able to leave until you complete it.”

  “Yes Father I’m sure.”

Dante responded. Alexander nodded, and Dante could have almost sworn that he saw a small grin forming on his father’s lips as he spoke the next words.

“Very well, you shall start tomorrow. The arena awaits.”
