Chapter 259

Days passed, and Jack was still peacefully sleeping. It seemed that his waking up earlier than expected, even for just a few minutes, did not come without its downsides.

  Federation, two days later.

  Step, step.

I was so engrossed in training that I didn’t notice weeks had gone by, Jonathan thought as he stepped out of his new room. When his eyes fell upon his old room, now belonging to Murdok, they frosted over. Just you wait. One day… one day I’ll repay this humiliation.

It was only after remembering that he needed to check on the current situation that he managed to tear his gaze away from the door.

He resumed his walk through the maze-like corridors, and when he entered the meeting hall, where Troy was already waiting, seated on a chair, the latter stood up.

  “President.”

Jonathan nodded at him and took his seat at the head of the table before saying, “Tell me what happened while I was away.”

“Yes.” Troy began recounting every event that, in his opinion, was worth sharing.

Jonathan listened calmly without interrupting even once, that was until Troy said, “Mavis met with an unknown spear-wielding man, and the two got into a fight. She was easily overpowered, but it seems that the man didn’t want to harm her and simply let her go. Since she couldn’t complete her mission, I sent her back to her residence to continue her training.”

  “Next, in Univara—”

  “Stop.”

Troy immediately halted and looked at the President with a calm expression.

“Did you find out who that man is?” Jonathan asked as he tapped the armrest.

Someone who could send one of the Numbers packing, the one ranked second, no less, so easily, without even needing to injure her, shouldn’t be unknown and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

He needed to figure out who that man was and keep tabs on him as he someone who couldn’t be left unchecked.

While it was fortunate that the man had no intention of harming Mavis, the same couldn’t be said for everyone else. There might be someone just as strong as that stranger who, instead of letting her leave, would have harmed her.

That was a risk Jonathan was unwilling to take, not after having poured so much money into his elite group.

Troy said evenly, “No one in any of the three main cities, or the many other smaller ones, has seen him yet. By now, if it weren’t for someone from the Numbers having met him, I wouldn’t have believed he existed.”

“Did she say what he looks like?”

Recalling his meeting with Mavis, Troy replied, “Late thirties, around 190 cm tall, with short black hair, and wearing a blue robe. While this description is enough to rule out most of the population, it’s still far too vague for us to identify him in a short amount of time. For now, we can only continue monitoring anyone who enters or leaves the cities and hope to find him.”

Late thirties, short black hair, spear-wielding… strong enough to defeat the Number ranked second without breaking a sweat… Jonathan sat quietly, thinking about what he had just heard.

But he couldn’t come up with any definite answers. The details were simply too few, and even if they excluded 99% of the population, there were still at least a hundred thousand, maybe millions, of people who could fit the description.

I must know who that is and monitor him, at least until the day Earth is officially assigned to me. Nothing must go wrong.

“Inform me as soon as you find any clues. Any. Understood?” he said sternly.

  “Yes, President.”

Jonathan gave a brief acknowledging sound and asked, “How’s the situation with Quarath?”

If that stranger could be considered a variable as small as a puddle, then Quarath was a variable as vast as an ocean. Anything regarding that city needed to be monitored at all times, it was simply that dangerous.

“We’ve slowed down the skirmishes, and everything seems to have gone back to normal. They didn’t attempt to fight back at all, only sending soldiers outside the walls to defend the city.”

Jonathan was about to nod when Troy added, “Lately, Nemesis’ manager, Cassidy Vale, has been seen leaving the city multiple times within a short span. We couldn’t find out the reason why, and she was too fast for our scouts to keep track of her, but this has never happened in the past few years.”

“Something urgent must have happened for her to leave her post. We’re doing our best to find out what,” Troy finished, then stood quietly.

Cassie, huh? Is this just a personal matter, or are they making their move and preparing for a war against me? Jonathan’s tapping quickened.

If it was the former, then he wouldn’t care, in fact, he hoped for it, but if it was the latter, then he needed to act swiftly, or when the war started, he would be caught with his pants down.

“Increase the number of scouts and do everything possible to place as many spies as you can in that city. I want to know whenever a leader of Nemesis leaves or enters. If that’s all, you can leave.”

  “Yes, President.”

Troy turned and was about to leave when Jonathan’s voice rang out once more.

“Send fifteen Grade 1s soldiers on the next skirmish. Go.”

He waved his hand, signaling for Troy to leave, and only when the door closed did he murmur, “I hope all of Nemesis’ generals are in Quarath and staying still. If not, combined with Cassie’s movements, it’s proof they’re plotting something, and it most likely involves my Federation.”

  His hands clenched into fists.

Based on what Murdok said, as long as I can keep Earth under my control until we ascend, then… I can focus solely on gaining higher status and training, knowing that nothing will be able to take it away from me.

Jonathan’s lips tugged into a faint smile at the thought of the future that awaited him.

  What Nemesis, what Murdok.

He would have nothing to fear once the true owners of the galaxy accepted him.

Rachel saw Thomas come out of Jack’s bedroom and asked, “How is he?”

“He’s still sleeping,” he replied, walking over to the sofa where Cassidy, Rachel, and Samuel were lounging.

“It’s been three days since he last woke up, and more than a week since he fell unconscious. Isn’t this way beyond what we initially expected?” Rachel muttered, loud enough for everyone to hear.

For the past three days, they had been taking turns staying at Jack’s apartment in case he woke up. At least that had been the original plan, but it seemed no one wanted to leave, so most of the time, everyone ended up being there at once.

“By the way, what’s wrong with Nova? It’s been so long since Jack fell unconscious, but he hasn’t visited even once,” Rachel grumbled quietly, trying to relieve some of her stress.

Thomas exclaimed, “You’re right! I haven’t seen him in a while. Let me call him, maybe he doesn’t even know Jack is injured.”

He pulled out his communication device and was about to make the call when Cassidy stopped him.

“Don’t blame him. He’s busy with something at the moment and won’t be able to answer, that’s why he isn’t here.”

“Do you know what he’s doing?” Samuel asked, curiosity edging his tone rather than suspicion.

Cassidy shook her head when a loud thud echoed through the room.

All four of them froze for a moment before shooting to their feet. Their heads swiveled toward Jack’s room, and without wasting a second, they hurried over.

When they entered, the first thing they saw was Jack slumped on the floor, struggling to push himself up but unable to. The sound of his heavy breathing echoed through the otherwise crowded yet silent room.

  “Jack!”

Someone shouted, prompting Samuel and Thomas to rush over and help him up before gently laying him back on the bed.

Jack looked at them and gave a faint smile. “Thanks… I didn’t know you were here.” His voice was raspy from not speaking for so long, making his words hard to understand.

He then panned his gaze to Rachel and Cassidy, who stood a short distance away, and said, “Thank you, too.”

While Thomas and Samuel simply patted his shoulder and smiled back, his calm demeanor had no soothing effect on someone else.

“Are you out of your mind? You just woke up and you’re already trying to stand up? Do you want to injure yourself again?” Rachel launched into a barrage of questions as she rushed to the bedside.

Jack scratched his head and said simply, “Sorry.”

Then, he looked at Cassidy, Rachel, Thomas, and Samuel one by one before eagerly asking, “Where’s Amelia?”

  The room went completely silent.
