Chapter 14: Never judge a book by its cover

Looking at the girl, Thita was unable to think straight. On one hand, she was the one killed Leslie and almost killed Alex. On the other hand though, she was a girl probably around 17 years old.

She had silver hair and for some reason, long pointy ears, which was new to Thita, since no one he had even met had such ears.

'Is she perhaps a different species as Zero had said? No, that's not what matters right now. She is a killer. She killed without a reason. But she is also a girl.'

Thita was in deep though. He had to figure out what would be the best course of action and fast. There was at least one more enemy and they might arrive any moment now.

'No. Her gender, her appearance. I shouldn't judge based on those. She killed two people with her own free will. That's what matters. I should proceed based on that. I should think based on that. Other trivial matters mustn't be taken into account. Yes. That should be it.'

Coming into a conclusion, Thita looked straight into her eyes and spoke with coldness, without revealing any hint of sympathy.

"Why? Why did you kill her?"

Recieving such a cold respond and still in pain, the girl shivered with fear. She didn't dare to not respond though.

"I.. Because she was... she was a human..."

Hearing such an answer, Thita couldn't help but be confused even though he didn't show it.

"And you killed her. Because of that?"

Thita's tone was cold, not revealing any emotions. He hoped that at least there was more to it. Killing someone because of what they are, was unacceptable. Something he couldn't forgive.

Hearing such a cold question, the girl felt even more terrified to the point that tears started rolling down her eyes.

"No! I killed her because... because people like her are the ones that.. that kill our kind. Because all of us suffer... because of humans!"

She found it hard to speak in her condition but she still spoke. Her life was on the line and the human close to her didn't seem to let her go that easily. She had to try to convince him. She didn't want to die.

Hearing her weak voice, Thita couldn't help but be troubled. The situation had became even more complicated.

'This is troublesome. If what she is saying is the truth, then she had a reason to act hostile against us. That doesn't cover the fact that she and her allies killed my party members but I can't kill her because of that. I will not become that kind of person. I mustn't.'

Coming to a conclusion, Thita was ready to reply to the girl, until he suddenly heard footsteps. Someone was coming towards him and fast.

With a hurried movements, Thita grabbed his knife from the girls leg and pulled dit out quickly, resulting in her screaming due to sudden pain. He didn't stop though and with a precise movement, he placed his knife extremely close to her neck, with the sharp side of the knife almost touching it.

He didn't knew who was coming towards him but he had to be prepared. He had to make use of whatever he had in his possession in order to survive. He had to be ready for anything the world threw at him. This was the only way to survive.

Not a moment later after he made his move, a figure appeared in front of them with an exhausted and hurried expression. He seemed to be boy around 17 years old with almost the same features as the girl. His hair was more messy though and not as pure as the girls.

Noticing the two of them, the boy shivered and quickly raised his bow, aiming directly at Thita's head, while shouting.

  "Let... let her go!"

In exchange, Thita pulled the knife closer to the girl's neck with a serious expression, resulting in her to get even more terrified and for the boy to grit his teeth.

  "Put your weapon down."

Thita's voice was calm betraying no emotions. Even though his seriousness though, the boy hesitated to put his only weapon against the enemy down. He had to think before making such a decision.

Thita didn't give him that time though, since after noticing the boys hesitation, he pulled the knife even closer to the girl's throat.

"No wait! It's down! It's down!!"

Not even a moment after Thita's threat, the boy had already let got of his bow and was now standing unarmed in front of the enemy. He was terrified, unsure if he had made the right choice.

"So please, I beg you. Let Ilia go please!"

The boy was pleading. His tone full of misery and despair with how things had turned out.

"And why should I let her go? Didn't you two just killed two of my friends? Why should I spare her? Why should I spare you murderers!?"

Thita's room for peaceful negotions had ended the moment the boy arrived. He had no choice but threaten them in order to negotiate. He had to make them follow and make sure that they won't disobey him. This way he could survive.

"Then take me instead! I will do whatever you want so please, let her go!"

Judging by the despair in his voice, Thita got reassured about the success rate of his plan. He could make it out of here alive.

"How many of you are there?"

Hearing the question, the boy answered immediately.

  "It's only us!"

Receiving an answer in such a short time, Thita knew that the boy was saying the truth. Still something didn't click right.

"So, you are telling me, you two came here alone, without anyone else and attacked us out of the blue, while also expecting to win?"

Thita's voice was filled with doubt about the boy's answer. He still didn't knew how this world's society worked but it seemed way to stupid for someone to do something like that.

Hearing Thita's doubt, the boy gritted his teeth and looked down as if he didn't know how to respond.

"I... I am saying the truth. Please, I beg you."

The situation was bad for the boy. He never expected that thing would turn out like this. He didn't know what to say, how to act. Even being truthful, didn't seem to be working.

"I understand. I will give you a choice then. If you follow what I say, I will let her go."

Hearing these words, the boy suddenly felt a but of hope. The situation didn't seem that hopeless anymore.

"If you fail to do what I say though, I will kill her without a second though."
