Pelt Embargo

Dawn threw off the last lingering chill of the night, her Kitsune form feeling lighter and more agile than any previous creature. The events of the previous night—the humans, the dark consumption, and the sudden, warm surge of Inari's Blessing—left her with a mix of dread and burning curiosity.

As she stepped out of the burrow, her instinct instantly called the shadows, and she found she could still cloak herself perfectly. Good, she thought. The blessing didn't strip my primary ability. She concentrated on the new energy, the warmth in her core. She needed a test subject, and she needed food for the little fox yokai.

She stalked an enormous Bear with mushroom spores on its back. The bear lumbered near the tree line. Drawing the black energy, she shaped a typical shadow arrow, the consuming dark energy swirled ready to be released. Before launching it, she experimented, shifting the energy's frequency. The arrow maintained its shape, but the dark energy now erupted into a silent, midnight-black fire.

She launched the projectile. It flew silently and struck the unsuspecting bear directly in the ribs. The bear didn't roar; it simply shuddered. The flame, almost invisible in the dark of night, instantly began to spread. The creature collapsed, rapidly drying out from the inside. Unlike the exhaustive struggle of the Frost Fang Wolf against the Permafrost Bear, this kill demanded almost no effort, merely intention. When the flame receded moments later, the bear was a massive, empty husk, its vitality utterly drained. The consumption was total, leaving the massive predator looking like sun-bleached driftwood.

Phantom recoiled slightly. The fire is just as consuming as the dark energy. She realized with frustration: she could not feed the starving foxes this dried out corpse. Any elemental kill, fire or shadow, would leave nothing but a husk. She quickly killed two enormous Mountain Boars with her bare hands, using a silent, efficient claw attack.

?When Phantom made it back to the burrow with the boars, she found the little foxes waiting anxiously. She let them feast. Their tiny, hollow stomachs seemed impossibly capable, swallowing the meat in as if a proper meal were a rare and treasured event.

Once they were done, Phantom established a mind link with one of the older pups, a tiny, nervous yokai.

"Who is mainly responsible for the hunting of your fur?" she asked, her voice soft and warm like the wolf mother she once knew.

The fox pup trembled slightly. "It's the human leader and the two men that always follow him. They are the ones who organize the hunts."

"What about the rest of the humans?" Phantom pressed.

The fox thought for a second before replying. "I think most humans only wear the pelts because their leader tells them to. But they do nothing to stop him, so I am unsure."

Phantom nodded, showing she understood the difficult truth of human compliance. She then told all the foxes to get some rest. "Tomorrow, I will check out the threat and go from there."

?In the morning, Phantom left the foxes sleeping soundly in the burrow. She went to the area where she had encountered the hunters and began using her heightened instincts and increased sense of smell to track the remnants of their scent back to their settlement.

The trail led to a small but fortified village, crowned by a tall, heavily-walled Castle. She found a massive, ancient tree just outside the defensive perimeter and silently jumped up into its tallest branches to observe.

Her instincts immediately flared, warning her of three unusually strong foes positioned within the castle walls. She looked down at the villagers walking around. Anger, cold and sharp, filled Phantom at the sight. Almost every person was wearing some form of fox pelt: hats, gloves, trim on coats. The sheer, casual disrespect for her kind made her blood boil.

She let time pass, waiting for her specific targets. Finally, as the sun began to set, the King and his two powerful Henchmen revealed themselves. As the trio left the castle, the leader stopped dead in his tracks.

The human leader, a massive man wearing a coat lined with shimmering fox fur, instantly felt a chill run down his spine. He looked around, his eyes searching for the menacing gaze that was making him feel so uneasy. Then he spotted her, a single-tail Kitsune crouched on a high-up branch, bathed in the last light of the sun.

Phantom immediately established a mind link with the leader. "Stop hunting my kind or else."

The King didn't speak aloud, but a cold smirk spread across his face as he replied through the mindlink. "I will not do as you ask. This kingdom thrives off the trade of your fur. Even if I was removed, the people here would continue on doing as they do now."

Phantom's reply was icy. "If you refuse to listen, then it will be your life."

The leader, crossing his arms and leaning back a little, scoffed. "You would be dead before you could reach me. I have three layers of defense between us, fox."

?Phantom had enough of the arrogant leader. She stood up on the branch, her Kitsune form poised for action. She looked at her human-like hands and wondered: Could she use her bow glove? Focusing her will, she reached out with her mind toward her known inventory. With a single finger, Phantom drew a dark line in mid-air in front of her. The dark outline shimmered—a temporary portal to her Stash. With a swift, devilish smile, Phantom reached her hand into the opening and pulled out her, black Bow Glove. She slid the glove onto her left hand and delivered one last, chilling message to the leader. "You say I cannot reach you? I never planned on coming down there."

Phantom stretched her left arm out toward the trio. She closed her left hand into a fist, and dark energy instantly started wrapping around it. A dark, compact vortex of energy began to build. Phantom reached her right hand forward, grabbing at the air next to her outstretched arm. As she pulled back her right arm, the dark energy began to condense and form into three lethal shadow arrows. They rotated around each other in a triple-helix pattern similar to DNA. The grip of her right hand relaxed, and the composite attack bolted forward.

One of the leader's henchmen felt the massive energy being shot at them. He instinctively stepped in front of the King and slashed down with his axe at the swirling arrows. The guard only manages to destroy one of the three arrows. The guard turns around to see where the other two arrows went. One arrow found its target instantly in the face of the second henchman. The other found its home in the leader's Adam's apple.

The remaining henchman looked to the two fallen figures behind him, seeing them dead and drained of life. He roared out in pure anger. "Come down here and fight me, you demon!"

Phantom thought to herself: Why should I make it fair for you? Was it ever fair when you slaughtered the foxes of this forest?

She drew back another dark energy attack. This time it looked like a standard arrow made of pure black energy, but instead of an arrowhead, it was tipped with a small circle the size of an orange. Phantom let go of the attack.

The last henchman saw the attack coming and readied a counter. Phantom, seeing him get into a swinging stance, smiled. I was hoping you'd do that again.

The henchman swung down at the arrow and sliced it. As his weapon cut through the ball on the end of the arrow, the midnight fire poured out of the ruptured projectile, engulfing him instantly. The black flame invisible in the night, burned and drained his life, leaving no trace of him but a cooling husk.

?Phantom watched the third husk collapse, the black flame instantly receding back into the shadows. The entire, lethal confrontation had lasted only a couple minutes. It was ruthless, efficient, and horrifyingly easy.

Before Phantom could process the cold satisfaction that settled in her core, Cosmo's voice chimed softly in her mind: "Situation Status. Cleared. Leave when ready."

Leave when ready. Phantom thought. She could end the simulation right now, yet the image of the four frightened, hollow-stomached fox pups came to mind. She still needed to teach them to survive on their own. She wouldn't leave them vulnerable to the anger she had just stirred.

Below her, near the main gate of the village, the three bodies remained sprawled. Two armed guards rounding the corner of the wall spotted the husks and froze, their shouts of alarm instantly swallowed by the night air.

Phantom shifted her gaze from the husks by the gate to the village below. Silence had fallen, thick and profound, shattered only by the distant, frightened sounds of running feet. The villagers, moments ago going about their business, now stared up at the commotion near the gate. Their eyes, wide with raw terror, were locked on the small, single-tailed figure perched on the high branch.

Phantom established a powerful vocal projection, letting her voice ring out over the entire settlement—sharp, clear, and cold. "THE HUNTS STOP NOW! THE FOX SPIRITS ARE PROTECTED!" she roared. "KILL ONE MORE FOR ITS FUR, AND I WILL BURN THIS ENTIRE SETTLEMENT TO ASH! DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"

A collective shudder ran through the crowd. No one spoke, but the fear was clear. Phantom, her mission accomplished, faded back into the shadows of the ancient tree, her dark energy and silent movement concealing her instant departure.

?She returned to the burrow as the sun was peeking up from the horizon. The four young yokai immediately scrambled toward her, their little bodies radiating a mix of relief and reverence. They had heard the whispers and the frantic ringing of the alarm bells.

The oldest fox pup looked up at Phantom with wide, adoring eyes. "You are mighty, Inari's Chosen! We felt the power of the fire! What do we call you?"

Phantom paused, the question of identity strange in her Kitsune form. She felt the warmth of the Yokai Fire stirring in her core, a power earned through the deliberate act of protecting her own. "You will call me Phantom," she said, the name settling into her spirit with surprising rightness. It was a name of shadow and spirit, devoid of her vulnerable human past, and it resonated with the authority she now commanded. She felt the focus of the four young foxes' reverence like a warm, new source of energy—a feedback loop of power and devotion that felt dangerously intoxicating.

She nudged the remaining boar meat toward them. "Eat, and rest. I have ended your immediate troubles, but there will be others. We must be ready."

As the little foxes began to feast, chattering excitedly about the "great Kitsune," Phantom settled into the corner of the burrow. She still didn't fully understand the power she wielded, but she understood its lesson: To thrive, you must stop being the hunted and become the force that ensures the survival of your own kind. She closed her eyes, letting the combined warmth of the shadow element and the Yokai Fire lull her to sleep.

?In the spectator room, Xander was leaning back in his chair, a look of profound satisfaction on his face. He sipped his coffee, pulling up the map display. The primary targets were eliminated, and Cosmo had already broadcast the "Cleared" status.

His eyes were locked on the screen showing the village, where a cluster of furious, frightened peasants was now gathering around the bodies by the gate. These were the true threat now—the chaotic, uncontrolled anger of the mob.

?"She's free to leave," Xander mused aloud, a curious smile spreading across his face. "The objective is complete, but the little fox is still going. She's choosing to stay behind and play the vengeful deity."

?He set down his mug. "She's finally found a cause worth dying for... or rather, worth killing for." He watched the screen, eager to see what calculating move, Phantom had up her sleeve next.
