Chapter 35: In the midst of battle

The burst of tree fibres and dust scattered around the quintet as they teleported directly into the battle.

Everything was so chaotic that nobody seemed to even notice that they had appeared from the ground, as the infantry lines had engaged each other, trying to hold back one another from the franticly reloading gunners who, in turn, were trying to spot any blitz of magic.

One side of the battle seemed to be wearing seemingly coordinated uniforms, with white and black tabards, and some kind of mass-produced shields and swords. That side consisted mostly of young men and women, and they were at least twice the number of soldiers compared to the otherwise, which was definitely some kind of rebel faction.

Riez spotted multiple spellcasters trying to hide in plain sight, her Deception Domain alerting her to them. The other side was better fighters, but less coordinated. Furthermore, they didn't appear to have many spellcasters. Some ragged old-looking guy who definitely shouldn't be out of his house, let alone on a battlefield, and a young-looking girl, who seemed clumsy with the way she kept dropping her spellbook.

Celeste was turning to give orders, wanting them to attack what was clearly the Empire and their troops, in the hopes that they would ingratiate themselves with the rebels.

Riez was more than happy to oblige, and with her will solidified, she knew that Spif and Spaf would know who to attack as well. She looked around for the pair of goblins, who had already jumped some poor guy, frantically wailing on him as if their life depended on it.

The Anarchist was more than happy to move between the ranks of the soldiers. She couldn't believe that they didn't spot her, and she assumed it was due to her incredibly high dexterity, even for a divine. Thanks to her Alacrity Domain, Riez saw every battle in almost slow motion, while she herself could move normally. With her actively trying to be stealthy, it was hard for someone to spot her on a good day. It was even harder in the din of battle to focus on her.

Riez quickly found herself at the backlines of the Empire's army, seeing quite a few mages. Some were clad in infantry armour, probably as a disguise, but others wore a black and white wizard hat with an incredibly floppy brim. Those guys were giving out orders to the other members of the army, and thanks to the Loyalty Domain, Riez knew that they were also functioning as the army's commanders.

She quickly started to approach one of them, but without using her Domains, she must have tripped some kind of magical alarm, as the mage turned his attention towards the goddess in disguise.

A bellow of anger escaped his lips, and lightning poured from his fingertips, clearly with the intention of burning Riez to a crisp. However, taking a large step back, the goddess saw the spell almost dissipate in the air, as she was suddenly outside a five-meter radius of the man.

That was slightly underwhelming. He was clearly one of the better spell casters, and yet he had missed. The man himself looked like he had been hit in the face with an anvil.

"What are you? How did you dodge that? Instant spells cannot be dodged!" The man seemed to almost scold her for defying the laws of physics.

It was true that Riez might have dodged the spell much easier than one of her fellow gods thanks to the Alacrity Domain, but she felt like one of her colleagues could have dodged said spell quite easily as well.

"Uhm... you missed? You sound crazy right now." Riez tried to gaslight the wizard.

"Missed? You can't miss pointing spells! They are literally point and something within range dies! Look!" The wizard started to move his hand in the same exact pattern that he had before, chanting loudly. "TRAN, MAGUS, TRAN, PYRUS, KIN" His voice boomed, each word clearly having some specific movement associated with it.

Once more, lightning burst from his fingertips, threatening his Riez in the face. She decided that she couldn't really pretend to be mortal and dodge the spell again, so she let it hit her.

The burst of electricity smacked her right in the face. The will of the Sphere of Magic hammered against Riez as the mortal channelled the mana. It didn't hurt. It barely tickled. She watched in amazement as she took a single point of damage.

That was underwhelming. It looked like it had taken a lot of effort to cast that spell, and Riez just hated to disappoint someone who had put so much effort into at least trying to kill her.

With a touch of her Deception Domain she made sure to create a convincing illusion of smoking with excess electricity, as if the spell had well and truly damaged her to the point where she was close to collapsing.

Even so, the wizard still seemed infuriated by the fact that she was still standing. "How can this be? That was a lightning spell from a third-tier wizard of the Elemental school! You should not be conscious, let alone have the strength to be standing!"

Riez had no idea what he meant, though she was fairly certain that whatever he had cast was something that she could tank pretty well until he ran out of mana.

The Anarchist of Existence wasn't sure what to say, but she knew that just letting her Deception Domain speak for her would probably give her some convincing lie that would cover up suspicion on her part.

"Oh, I think you know why I am still standing, my good man." She said, leaning on her divine Domain to get her out of trouble.

The wizard's face turned crimson, almost as if it was painted in black and white like the rest of his outfit. "No. It cannot be. What is the inquisition doing here? Why are you fighting for the other side?"

That was not the explanation that Riez had expected, but it was one that she was happy to take. "I am afraid that you don't have high enough clearance to know anything about our plans. However, I wish you all the luck navigating the Whirlpool of Souls."

She moved, no longer with the diminished speed of a human, but with her full celestial speed. In an instant, she was behind the spellcaster, a pair of knives Celeste had made plunged between the back of his rips. Her strength and speed made it easy, and the man didn't even get a word out before he passed. His eyes simply widened in realisation before he crumbled to the ground.

The attack had proved quite efficient, and Riez went from wizard to wizard, making sure that they were no longer a threat to the revolutionary troops

Celeste had to rein herself in. She had assumed that she was trash at combat, but every time she made an attack with her one-handed maul, it was far stronger than she had expected. The goddess had pulled back any divine effects she had up, not wanting anyone to notice that she might be more than what she appeared. Even if it meant that multiple people around her would be dying thanks to the fight.

Despite this restraint on her powers, the first time she had swung at a charging soldier, the weapon had torn his head clean off, and the power of her swing had not only sent him flying but three of his comrades behind him had been torn in half as well.

The way Jasmine had looked at Celeste was something that the goddess might not forget for a while.

"Uhm... I shouldn't be able to do that." She mumbled, just loud enough that the Scribe of the gods could hear it.

The archmage in disguise rolled her eyes a little. "You really need to hold back. I know dat you are used to getteng knocked down by pretty much anyt'eng, but dat is because you have been fighteng Archdemahns and gods. Yoehr body can handle much mhore than what you think, so restrain yoehrself... like me."

She underlined the words by wreathing her fists in water and hammering them into some poor bastard. His blood was then pulled from his body, seemingly fueling the spell that Jasmine was casting. She took down fighters, one after the other, as if they were little more than mosquitoes.

Celeste blinked, only holding up an arm and letting her armour take a hit from a sword before effectively only poking her assailant with the maul, which still killed him in a single hit. Her armour had taken no damage whatsoever, something that she was quite proud of.

"How is what you are doing not attracting attention?" The goddess asked the archmage, clearly surprised that nobody was making a commotion about the level of destruction that Jasmine was spreading.

"Oh dat is easy. This spell is known as waterhammer, and it is hwanstly wan av de mhore commahn war magics." Jasmine explained, practically tearing one soldier apart with the swirling mixture of blood and water around her fists. "Wan av de majhr t'engs dat any spellcaster has to whorry about in war is deir mana levels. I have quite a sizeable pool av around 2000 mana, however, an hordinary fourth-tier spell caster has 26, and dat is if dey haven't skimped out on deir mana exercises. A fourth-tier spell costs around 8 mana to cast, meaneng dat you can cast three av those suckers befhore you are runneng dry. This is w'ere Waterhammer becomes exceedengly useful. While it is a touch spell, which puts you in danger, you only need to cast it once. Combined with de Elementalest special power dat allows wan to gain 2 mana back with every kill, it is fairly commahn to see this type av spell."

She must have been right because even though a couple of gunners seemed to spot her, they didn't call out anything extraordinary. The fact that Jasmine had the fighting skills to dodge pretty much any attacks that came her way seemed to be the reason why the spell functioned as well as it did.

Celeste sheathed her weapon and instead punched an incoming soldier. She was elated when she only knocked him out instead of killing him outright.

"So what was the deal with your barrier magics? That seems to be something you can use a certain number of times per day." Celeste asked, taking care of two more charging soldiers.

"Yea, de old man told me about how yoehr husband and himself had created dat spellschool. It was apparently deeply unique and I think you can thank yoehr husband fhor dat, along with de fact dat it was created befhore magic became truly stable." Jasmine said, tearing in around six soldiers, going from one to the other, absolutely tearing them apart with her spell.

When it became clear what kind of danger Jasmine posed, the gunners were happy to level their ranged weapons at her. Celeste was quick to step in, taking up position between the weapons and the Scribe. She didn't expect that the guns would hurt Jasmine, but it would be suspicious if someone who was unarmored withstood the bullets, while someone wearing armour could blame the metal plating for why they were able to survive.

The two women danced around each other, Celeste blocking and deflecting any attacks that might pose a threat to any mortal mage, while at the same time, Jasmine tore apart the enemy lines.

It wasn't long before the imperial army was routed, scattering in an effort to save themselves, and leaving behind a mostly intact revolutionary army and the quintet of divine beings.
