The end

As the wind blows unwavering deep within the black ruins, a letter lies caught in a piece of rock. Although there is no longer a recipient, although the sender could never be found, if you the reader would like to know the letter's content, I can tell you, read along.

  "Dear Mary

Today I write to you with little more than a distraction of thought as the fear that afflicts me has struck me down with confusion, I fear that we end up considering this torment pleasant, I fear that I will not be able to give you one last kiss so close to the end.

The fall of the vampires has been talked about for decades now, I can't think of a future after that but would be a change of airs at the very least. Thinking that my grandparents were less than slaves and my parents and I were no different I never thought that the lives of torment would really be ending with me or in my time.

It is even harder to believe since he is not... he was not a unique case. Thousands and thousands of castles have been covering the new and old world, no one could expect that those colossal constructions would be as fragile in the future as the thin ice covering the windows in winter.

The lord of this tomb looks gloomy, taciturn, doubtful. Coming from this being that could constantly be seen walking the corridors with a hurried step, the stillness of his recent walk is surprising.

They say that before people died by the dozens just to quench their thirst, now not one has disappeared in the last decade. Surely he knows the fall of this monument to dead is near, surely he fears his sins will tear him apart.

Strangely the last vampire feels "close", for some reason it feels like something human, if not, at least feels different than before. While glad that you do not have the need to experience the horrors that brought me to this trap, I still want to express the feeling of it. Just like the wall that used to be invincible before an earthquake, now feels like something that under a thousand wishes might really fall. I just don't know what the Parish priest has done but it works, it's not impossible anymore.

It is terrible to just live while you're free over there but it would be worse to have you here trapped with me. It still amazes me that these letters can still get to those outside, a part of me is unable to really believe it, I am sure that hope is a position that the monsters give us, or a cure that provides vitality to these horrendous beings.

With this I say goodbye to you, Maria, my love. I can only hope to see you one more day, it fills me with joy to know that you and my girl have left and this oppressive feeling is only been carried by me. I hope God gives me the opportunity to leave this life with at least one more glimpse of you.

With love, Your Brother of race and beloved husband

  Romualdo"

  ...

In that letter adrift, next to the rubble of what was once a village, you can hear the wind passing by, you can see the black and burnt houses.

Inside of that village near a large castle, a rag is tied up and containing some coins and a little sherry candy.

There is no one left to eat it, it has been months since anyone lived close, and if I were to happen that someone devoured it, it could be anything, but never a human.

As the wind blows hard stirring the coals, along with the letter that survives the passage of time, a scream is heard deep in the corners, a muffled scream that as I said... It's all but human.
