Chapter 28: The laughter of Evil

“Well, here we are! This has to be it.”

A man close to his thirties said as he looked towards the entrance to a cave.

“Are you sure we aren't lost? There isn't anyone protecting the entrance.”

Another man close to the age of the other said, as he looked towards the similar cave with a bit of disappointment.

“Oh shut up Rel! You know damn well we aren't lost! And this has to be it! The children's description led us directly here so either they were lying or they didn't explain it right!”

The first man responded to the accusations.

Both of them seemed like humans on the surface but if you looked closely you could spot their wolf-like ears. So in the end there weren't humans but instead the race by the name of the ‘beast race’.

“I hope you are right then Reinfa because this place really gives off quite the negative aura! Seriously, how can our cousins live somewhere like that?”

“Oh shut up you and your negativity! Obviously they chose it to scare off predators! Why need to guard it if the enemy is going to ignore it? After all, I am very sure that there are idiots like you who wouldn't check the cave due to some negative aura or some similar shit!”

“Oh shut it! Let's just get in already! There is no point in staying out here and have me listen to your stupidity!”

As Rel said that, he started heading towards the cave and after saying another insult to him, Reinfa soon followed.

“Man, this place sure is creepy. Makes me want to relocate our cousins as soon as possible. Like seriously, how can their kids grow up to be strong when raised in such a filthy place?”

“Oh, so now you say it's creepy? Back when I said it though you just had to make fun of me. Sometimes I just can't understand you, Rei-?!”

Just as Rel was about to finish, he suddenly stopped speaking and came to a halt, causing Reinfa to bump into him.

“What the heck man! Don't just-!?”

Before Reinfa could finish though, Rel quickly spoke.

“Shut up! Use your nose idiot!”

Feeling frustrated, Reinfa decided to not continue arguing and did as he was told. Doing so, he suddenly smelt what Rel had to have smelt and led him to stop without warning.

“Blood. And it belongs to one of our own?”

As both of them stood still, their noses continued to get filled with the smell of blood and their minds started racing, trying to figure out what might be hidden at the end of the cave.

“We need to go.” Rel said, breaking the silence with a voice filled with seriousness.

“Go? Go where? Can't you smell what I smell Rel!? I am not just going to leave while I know that my own kind is injured! I am going down.”

Reinfa said with a voice filled with seriousness and determination.

“Don't act like a hero you idiot! Whatever is down there is dangerous! We can't just go unprepared and risk it!”

“Dangerous!? How dare you, you coward! I am going down and I am killing whatever it is! So don't you dare try to stop me just because you are older than me! I would rather die than give up saving my kind!”

Reinfa said with a voice full of determination and not a moment later, he started running with anger and fury towards the end of the cave.

  “No! You idiot!”

Rel screamed and rushed towards Reinfa while gritting his teeth.

As the two continued running, Reinfa suddenly came to a sudden stop and his eyes widened by an unexpected sight. Following him, Rel also stopped just behind Reinfa, his eyes having a similar reaction and his fear starting to come true.

The beast people's eyesight was extremely good and their ability to see in the dark was almost flawless, so it was no wonder that both of them could see what was in front of them extremely clearly.

As both of them stood and watched the sight in front of them, Reinfa suddenly grabbed his mouth with both his hands and bent down, as he suddenly felt like his stomach was about to get rid of all its content by just witnessing what stood in front of them.

The sight was like a scene from a thriller. Just, this time it was way more realistic. Wolves were hanging from the sealing of the cave with their intestines used as a makeshift rope, wrapped around their head and causing them to move sideways along the air that filled the cave.

Their stomachs were open, blood flowing from them non-stop and their bodies destroyed and completely mutilated, as if the thing that attacked them didn't even care about eating them, only doing as much damage as possible.

The ground was filled with blood and several smaller bodies, these ones seeming to belong to the younger wolves, who probably due their age couldn't be hanged properly, so they were just left in the ground, pinned on top of sharp rocks that entered from their lower body and exited from their top.

The sight was straight up horrific and the more one looked at it, he could see even more horrific details, as if the one who made it, just wanted to make the most disgusting scene possible.

Unlike Reinfa, Rel didn't vomit, he just stood there silently, his body still just like a statue. His heart beats skyrocketing and his mind filled with only one emotion. Fear. Just plain old fear. A fear he had wished that he would never feel again.

Despite his fear though, he still tried to speak. He still tried to communicate.

“Reinfa, we… we need to… we need to go.”

Hearing his buddy and senior speak with so much fear, a person he once even admired for his combat skills and stamina, Reinfa couldn't help but feel a shiver run though his entire body.

But he didn't respond. Not because he didn't want to though, but because something else responded first.

Suddenly, the bodies of the wolves, if one could even say that they even resembled bodies now, started twitching and suddenly, all of them started making a similar yet somehow different sound.

It was distorted, as if alien. It was a sound that no organism should make yet somehow it did. The sound was loud and it somehow seemed to resemble laughter. A laughter way too distorted. A laughter way too evil to be called a laughter. A sound that despite its alien sound, got translated as a laughter through both of their minds.

The dead bodies of all the wolves were laughing. They were laughing their hearts out. It was as if their voices came straight from the deepest pits of hell. As if hell itself was inviting the two of them to join them.

Both of them froze, while witnessing the scene in front of them, their bodies numb and their minds fueled with fear, unable to make sense of what was happening in front of them.

But Rel, despite the fear, didn't lose his instinct to survive. At least not all of it.

With determination and using all his will power, he bit his tongue while gritting his teeth with as much strength as he could use causing his body to snap back to reality.

Extending his hand, he grabbed Reinfa's shirt and started running towards the exit while dragging Reinfa's body.

Reinfa too snapped back to reality a few seconds after he felt his body being dragged and after realizing his buddy's actions, he quickly stood up and followed him out with the fear still present in his body.

A few moments later, they ended up getting out of the cave, unharmed by the entity that was inside it and being able to feel a slight sense of relief. Both of them felt exhausted, as if they just ran a marathon and even more since a marathon wasn't something that hard for their strength.

“What, what the hell was that?”

Reinfa asked Rel while he was slowly starting to get back to his senses.

Hearing his question and taking a deep breath, Rel raised his fist and punched Reinfa directly in his head with not much strength to cause any permanent damage but enough to send him flying.

“Next time! No, there will not be a next time! When I tell you to leave you leave! When I tell you to abandon someone you abandon them! When I tell you, you can't beat something, you can't! So, if you ever run off on your again I will make sure you die even if you survive your encounter! Did I make myself clear you piece of shit!”

Grabbing his nose which might have ended up getting broken and clenching his other fist while hearing his buddy's cruel words, Reinfa couldn't help but be angry towards him. But looking at a small amount of blood that came out of Rel's mouth, Reinfa couldn't help but understand his reasoning.

“I understand. I will not repeat it.”

As he said so, a sudden laughter similar to the ones they heard before came from the cave, except this time, there was only one and it somehow felt even more devious and evil even if that was even possible.

Feeling a shiver run though their bodies, the two two of them started leaving the area with quick steps and not looking behind them. Whatever was the source of the sounds, wasn't something to be messed with. At least not with someone like them.
