Chapter 20: A nights travel

‘Well, today was surprisingly peaceful at least.’

Thita thought, while laying on the bed that the inn offered. It had gotten dark outside and he didn't want to stay out for too long.

All he did today was helping around the town and completing easy quests that didn't involve combat, and despite it being less dangerous than what he did yesterday, he couldn't say that it wasn't tiring.

After helping the old man move his stuff out, he proceeded to claim his reward and began looking for other quests that rewarded highly despite them being easy. At the end of the day, he had successfully completed 5 quests in total, which gave him no less than 50 silver coins.

Despite the money though, he also gained some useful information about this world, which would come in great use in helping with his adaptivity in this new way of living. Needless to say, he couldn't help but be satisfied with what he achieved despite knowing that the money he made was no way near the money he would gain by doing combat quests.

‘It's decided then. Tomorrow I am heading out again.’

Even though his first experience outside the gates didn't turn out that great, he decided to head out once again. It wasn't because he needed money, but for more information.

To be more specific, he didn't forget about the blessing that Zero said that he gave him and he needed to test it out somewhere and that somewhere had to be far away from other people. At least, that was his judgement.

Furthermore, the monsters and their descriptions that he always saw on paper had really picked his interest and even though fighting them would be dangerous to say the least, he couldn't help himself. That didn't mean of course that he could jump straight to monsters of high rank, but instead choose a quest with difficulty close to his own rank.

He also decided to head out alone this time, since that way he was free to act with his own judgment and he didn't need to hide his inexperience. Sure, it might be more dangerous that way, but he didn't have much to lose at this point.

‘So, I should buy some sort of backpack and definitely something to hold water. Yeah that seems reasonable.’

Overwhelmed with his own thoughts, Thita slowly started falling asleep and surely enough, after a little more time passed, he had completely fallen asleep. Today's day was over yet again. A new day awaited him tomorrow. Hopefully, as peaceful as today's day was.

Meanwhile, several hundreds of kilometers away from Thita, several carriages made their way through a dark forest, in the middle of a storm.

“Sir! Please reconsider your decision. It is far too dangerous to continue this trip with such terrible weather!”

A young man riding one of the horses said while looking at a middle-aged man who sat comfortably inside one of the carriages. Hearing him, the middle-aged man responded to him with anger.

“How many times do I have to tell you to not question my judgement huh!? I can't just back down on my promises because of some stupid reason! When I have to be somewhere at a certain time, I get to that place no matter what! Got it!?”

Hearing his response, the young man, despite being in a lower position, decided to keep insisting.

“But Sir! If we get attacked at a time like this, our losses would be unimaginable! I understand the importance of fulfilling your promises, but we are putting both our lives and the lives of your possessions in danger!”

“Danger!? Danger you say!? We have five A rank mages and more than twenty soldiers protecting each and every side of our carriages! No person in their right mind would dare to attack us under these conditions and even if they did, they have little to no chances of winning! So get back to your position and tell the others to keep moving forward, will you?”

Understanding that his words were hitting shut ears, the soldier still seemed reluctant to obey the commands given to him. In desperation, he could only mutter some final words before returning to his position.

  “But, what about them?”

Following his gaze after hearing his words, the middle-aged man, looked towards the dense forest, which they were quickly traversing through. He didn't see nothing out of he ordinary though, but he could understand that something seemed to be wrong.

It wasn't something he saw though, but just a weird feeling that he couldn't help but feel when he was looking towards it. A slight feeling of fear. Understanding that and looking at the young man again, the middle-aged man spoke once again.

“I see what you are worried about, but fear not! These creatures won't dare to attack us especially since we are om such high numbers! Furthermore, as I already mentioned, we have five A ranks mages ready to attack if any of these disgusting creatures dare to make a move on us! So get back in your position and tell the others not to worry with such trivial matters. I have taken every possibility into around after all!”

Hearing the reassuring tone of his boss, the young man let out a sigh of relief and nodded, while he slowly moved his horse back into position. Still, he couldn't shake off that feeling of fear in the back of his head. This ominous feeling of fear.

At the same time, in the carriage behind the one that the middle-aged man was seating comfortably, someone else had overheard their conversation. Sitting on the cold wooden floor which was wet due to the rain, a girl who seemed no older than 17, glanced towards the forest just like the other two did.

Her eyes were shining with a bright yellow color and her face didn't show any sign of fear. Instead, she looked towards it coldly, and continued staring towards the darkness.

Perhaps, it was just a fluke, but the forest or something else entirely that resided within it, seemed to sense her cold gaze. Even if it did sense it though, it didn't seemed bothered by it.

‘That's right. Keep on ignoring me, until it's too late for you. All of you will pay the price for existing, one way or another after all. I will make sure that happens, no matter what. So enjoy every remaining moment of your pathetic existence while you still can.'
