Chapter 21: Experimenting on monsters

‘Is this some type of joke?’

Looking at the monster which tried to climb up his shoe, Thita couldn't help but be surprised.

Today, he had decided to take on a quest with an E rank difficulty, and after arriving at the location, he couldn't help but be surprised with not only the appearance, but also with the little to no amount of strength that the enemy possessed.

  ‘Are these things even dangerous?’

Continuing to look towards the small slimy monster which still didn't manage to climb on top of Thita's shoe, probably because he was kicking it back every time it tried to, Thita decided to just try and get this over with.

Raising his foot upwards and causing the monster which was known by the name ‘Slime’ to fall down from his shoe, Thita took the opportunity and stepped on it with force. As a result, the monster, under such pressure, exploded into tiny bits which started to melt, turning into a watery substance at a fast pace, now that they were separated from the main body.

Pulling his foot aside, Thita bowed down and picked up a shiny light blue colored crystal, from the place the slime once was.

‘So this is what the drops from monsters are supposed to be.’

Looking at the small, lightweight crystal in his hand, Thita sighted and placed it inside his pocket. He had read that they were worth around 50 silver each, depending on their size and despite not being that valuable, they could add up really easily.

He had also read that the crystal located in the middle of the slime is what makes it move and in order to kill it, one had to remove it from its body. This also seemed to be the case for most of the other monsters too.

Not only that, but monsters, unlike animals, couldn't be considered living organisms since they weren't made from organic matter. Instead, they were being made from mana and their cores or in other words the crystals located in their very core, were nothing else, but large amounts of mana, which turned into a solid object.

The body around that crystal, seemed to also be made from mana, but unlike the core, it's much more fragile and made with much less amounts of mana. In other words, monsters were being completely new to someone like Thita and this was the perfect opportunity to verify the knowledge he had gathered so far and even gain some personal experience.

Looking towards some other slimes which had gathered in this clearing inside the forest, Thita sighted and walked towards another slime.

‘Hopefully, this will be as easy as the first one.’

“Sorry little one, looks like your luck ran out.”

Glancing towards the small slime in the ground, which didn't seem to be able to hear his words, Thita picked up his pocket knife from his other pocket and held it firmly in his hand.

The slime, unable to see what he was doing and moving towards his direction as if out of instinct, was suddenly cut in half. Despite the loss of almost half its body though, the slime didn't seem that bothered by it and kept moving towards him, as if it was attracted by an unseen force.

‘I see, so what if I do this instead?’

With a firm hold of his knife, Thita attacked the smile again, but this time, he specifically targeted it's core sure enough, this time the slime didn't move after the hit. Despite the success though, the crystals inside the slime also broke in the process, making this kill pointless.

  ‘How about with less force?’

Moving towards his next victim, Thita tried again and surely enough, this time the crystal was successfully removed without breaking, causing the slime to melt and deform at a rapid pace.

He didn't stop there though and one after another, he started to attack each slime that he saw. Some he kicked with force, others he smashed against the trees and he even cut one enough times for it to no longer move, despite still having a crystal.

In the end, he had successfully cleared the area from the slimes like the mission told and he had gained tons of information that he didn't know. For example, he learned that their sizes could vary depending on the size of their crystal.

Not only that, but he also learned that after coming in contact with him, they started to drain his mana, which he was able to figure out due to similarity of the feeling he felt when he touched the evaluation crystal all the way back when he was getting evaluated in order to become an adventurer.

‘Turns out, this was worth my time.’

Looking at all the shiny crystals in his palm and all the things he was able to learn, he couldn't help but be satisfied with his newfound knowledge.

Putting his loot back in his pocket and looking at the sun to evaluate how much more time he had before getting dark, Thita smiled.

‘Turns out I still have plenty of time to try this out. Let's see how that goes.’

Looking around him and making sure that no one was close to him, Thita decided to try what he was meaning to try since yesterday. Zero had told him that he had given him some sort of blessing that allowed him to teleport and considering the danger he was put in, the first day he arrived, learning how to use it was one of his top priorities.

Still, despite Zero’s explanations, he wasn't quite sure if using it would be as natural as speaking and understanding the language of this world. So this was a perfect opportunity for him to test it and try to get familiar with using it in case of emergencies. Of course, this depended on the fact that he would actually be able to to use it in the first place.

‘Oh well, here goes nothing. Time to try this out!’
