Ch 71: An Ancient Monarch and The Spy

The Wooralian capital of Qur'Anther is bustling with news of the warfronts as Sunhale teleports into the city with Gira once more, as they walk the streets they see children playing completely unaware of the war outside the empire. The children seem to recognise Gira as they run up to her and around her as they laugh, Gira ruffles their hair as she gives them a smile.

"Seems you've grown popular" Sunhale said somewhat amusedly

"Well children everywhere are adorable and they regularly get themselves hurt so they got sent to the Magical Research and Development Institute when I was there, children being children they saw a human and got curious so I healed them and well seems they like me" Gira said with a small smile

"Got much of a grasp on our language yet?" Sunhale asked

"A little, its very different from the human language so I can only say a couple things and have a hard time understanding, the telepathic teaching from Vinak has made the process quicker though" Gira said

"Fair enough, you'll get it some day then I'm sure you'll get to hear how much the children like you" Sunhale said

"I should probably head back to Vinak right now anyway, you have a meeting correct?" Gira asked

"Indeed, I must make my way to the palace. I shall check in with you later" Sunhale said

Gira nods before they walk in separate directions, as Sunhale walks towards the palace his demeanour gradually changes as he gets closer, he stands more straight and uses magic to properly clean off anything from his clothing before getting to the palace gates where the guards stationed there continue their duty yet when they see him they take a knee and bow their heads.

"Sunhale of Lar'Tureak, you return with Otaper's hand guiding your path" One guard said

"The third eye of our Monarchs right hand has returned for an audience. I request entry" Sunhale said

The palace guards nod and open the way for him, Sunhale walks in and as he passes the threshold he can feel the thrumming of ancient magic within the humble palace walls made from trees, he feels it far more than he did last time when he met with Reifal. Sunhale takes a deep breathe as he makes his way through the wooden halls until it opens up to a small clearing surrounded by trees, different to the area where the Darkness of Otaper is kept this place is bright and regal in its beauty. In the middle of this clearing is a throne made from tree yet it looks as though it grew from the ground in that shape, created perfectly through magic and on it sits Isaile Monarch of the Wooralian Empire in their aged appearance with more power than Sunhale has by thousands of times yet he feels something else within all that power. Sunhale steps forward and takes a knee bowing his head to the ancient monarch before him.

"Monarch Isaile, it has been some time. I am glad to see you in good health" Sunhale said with respect flowing through his voice

"Sunhale, I have heard tell of your recent exploits... and promotion" Isaile said as they leaned forward moving the tree branch of a walking stick to hold herself up even as they sit

Sunhale knows immediately of what Isaile speaks, the tattoos on his body move in recognition as he looks at Isaile.

"I serve Otaper closer than ever even if I am aiding the chosen of Irankar" Sunhale said

"Speaking of, for all that I've heard of you I have heard more of him given him being at the forefront of his army, so with your honest opinion how is the necromancer doing these days?" Isaile said

"He is doing well, far more so than I'd have thought a year ago, gods it has been that long now hasn't it?" Sunhale said as a moment of quiet reflection on the years events occurs in his mind drawing a small chuckle from Isaile

"Oh, you'll have many of those moments as wars like this drag on even with the excitements that ones such as this bring but please continue" Isaile said

"Right. I mean what I said though, he has majorly improved, for a while most of the large scale operations ended in a battle between gods now admittedly that was down to chosen being chosen but its been a while since we've encountered another and even among the strongest enemies we've fought outside of divine abilities he has come out on top with his own power as opposed to back then where he needed a lot of help or left it mostly to the undead. He has trained both physically and magically near constantly since you've last seen him and grown immensely as a result but even outside of that he has improved in other areas as well, he's gotten a good grasp on strategy and war planning as well as a hold on some diplomatic matters given we took a city through diplomatic means" Sunhale said pride flowing in his words now

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

"Seems you are quite proud of his development" Isaile said

"That I am, when I had met him I had never thought I'd befriend him or come to genuinely care for the man but I am not afraid to say I have and I am happy for his accomplishments" Sunhale said

"Setting aside your proud demeanour, do you believe he will give back the elven bodies from his army once the war is over?" Isaile said with a more serious tone

"I do believe so, I will admit that obviously I know not everything going on in his head but I know that he will generally do what he says he will, he has one goal once thats accomplished he'll likely not need an army at all and if he does he'd likely keep the undead that didn't have a proper life such as the ones made from Ghairlakriars corpse" Sunhale said

"I do have questions about that, Ghairlakriar predated out archives, we believed she was immortal" Isaile said

"Only in that she had been denied death, one punishment from Irankar. She aided us and had but one request, to die, her request was granted through our necromancers chosen magic gifted by the same god who gave the punishment" Sunhale said

"Will we continue to dance around his name 'Irankar'? Or shall we finally use the necromancers real name?" Isaile asked

"Not for me to decide, you wanted me here so you could find out more of him and his ideals, goals and whatnot just so you could talk with him properly as leaders. The time for you to learn his name will be then" Sunhale said knowing they didn't expect an actual response

"Fair enough, fair enough. I will say given all that I've heard of him and with both his conduct in his time here as well as that of your friend Gira, I am interested in having a proper conversation with this man. I also do wish to get his measure how how much he has truly grown since back then" Isaile said

"I can guess you also want to know his plans for when its all done as well as what his actual goal in this war is" Sunhale said

"Indeed, no man especially one coming from seemingly nowhere and with a good heart just starts a war and becoming a chosen? Especially for Irankar? That requires a force of will and determination no one has just for the duty" Isaile said

"Actually not correct in that statement, we learned of an older chosen who did become a chosen essentially for the duty of it. They didn't like the way the world was due to the gods and decided to bring justice to the world" Sunhale said surprising Isaile

"We've no records of that, I'll guess they predate them by a long time then" Isaile said

"Indeed but that's something I'll add to the archives myself once this is all over or maybe when you and Raeknar talk" Sunhale said

"Well you can tell him I request he come to the palace tomorrow" Isaile said as they rest against the throne

"I shall but first do you mind if I ask a question?" Sunhale asked

"Other than that one you mean? Yes, you may" Isaile said with a smile

"Given the powers I have now, similarly to Raeknar I can sense divine magic in others, differently than feeling the familiarity of the tattoos you also bear. There is divine magic coming from you, so I must ask do you also have the powers Reifal and I have?" Sunhale asked making Isaile laugh

"Do you think Otaper is the only god that favours our people?" Isaile said as they closed their eyes

"Which one?" Sunhale asked genuinely curious

Within moments his answer is brought as he sees Isailes eyes open but not as they normally should instead they open sideways and more oddly as if they were made of pages like a book, with what look like tears rolling down their face except they're scrolls unfurling.

"The god of knowledge Eirakel... I would have thought if anyone the head archivist Fal'Rine would be the chosen for that" Sunhale said with both surprise and curiosity

"While Fal'Rine is a fine man and knowledgeable given his role a thousand years ago the archive was threatened, it was to be shut down, knowledge torn away then destroyed and I was the one who stopped that from happening well mostly, some books were destroyed but I saved some. Eirakel looked fondly upon us for the archive and me more so given I protected the knowledge held within its halls. Had this not happened then I have no doubt Fal'Rine would have been the one to get this divine appointment" Isaile said

"Well suffice to say this day has surprised me. I should be going now however, I will tell Raeknar of your planned meeting tomorrow so he will attend" Sunhale said

"Go with the grace of Otapers chosen" Isaile said

"And maybe you continue rule with the wisdom of Eirakels chosen" Sunhale said before teleporting back to the fortress

Sunhale waits around for several hours in the fortress until Yorun teleports back after the Zeilna Islands were reconquered, Yorun sees Sunhale waiting and walks over.

"So, how'd visiting your monarch go?" Yorun asked

"Well they wish to speak to you and more than that I found out they're a chosen of Eirakel otherwise known to you as Qunatil" Sunhale said

"The god of knowledge? I knew they were a chosen or at least guessed as much later given that back then Raeknar mentioned Isaile was touched by one of the gods yet I wouldn't have assumed the god of knowledge" Yorun said as he scratched his chin

"Fair enough, regardless they want to speak to you tomorrow at the Qur'Anther palace, I'll escort you there when tomorrow comes just do make sure to get cleaned up before then, you did face combat today" Sunhale said

"I will you need not worry there" Yorun said

Both men then left to either rest of train for a while longer, Yorun thinks on what could be said the following day to Isaile given their status and power on the world stage, he knows if an official alliance is given the world will hear it and he will have far too more nations hearing of him than he'd have ever thought. This line of thinking follows him even has he sleeps that night all the while his army patrols the seas around the Zeilna islands...
